Abstract

Introduction: The postpartum period requires maternal readiness to adapt to physiological, psychological, and lactation changes. Insufficient knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, breast care, oxytocin massage, and lactation massage may reduce maternal confidence and interfere with breastfeeding success.

Objectives: This case report aimed to describe the implementation of health education on oxytocin massage and lactation massage to improve lactation knowledge and breastfeeding readiness in a vaginal postpartum patient with a nursing diagnosis of knowledge deficit.

Method: This case report involved one day-0 postpartum mother who delivered vaginally at RSU Aisyiyah Muntilan. Data were obtained through nursing assessment, observation, interview, and return-demonstration evaluation. Health education was delivered using explanation, demonstration, question-and-answer, and family involvement methods.

Result: Before education, the patient did not know breast care, correct breastfeeding techniques, or non-pharmacological efforts to facilitate breast milk release. After the intervention, the patient and husband were able to explain the benefits and steps of oxytocin and lactation massage and redemonstrate the techniques with minimal guidance.

Conclusion: Health education on oxytocin massage and lactation massage improved the knowledge and practical skills of the patient and family. Family involvement may support independent implementation at home and promote breastfeeding readiness.
