Abstract

Introduction: Emesis gravidarum is a condition characterized by excessive nausea and vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy, which can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, weight loss, sleep disturbances, and decreased quality of life in pregnant women. Appropriate management is required to prevent further complications.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure therapy at the Zusanli (ST36) point as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women with emesis gravidarum at Airan Raya Hospital in 2024.

Method: This study used a case study design involving two patients with hyperemesis gravidarum who experienced nausea in the Mutmainah 327 ward of Airan Raya Hospital, Bandar Lampung, in 2025. The intervention consisted of acupressure therapy at the Zusanli (ST36) point, performed three times a day for 10 minutes each session. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The level of nausea was measured using the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (INVR) questionnaire to compare conditions before and after the intervention while adhering to research ethics principles.

Results: The results showed a decrease in the nausea score from 10 to 4, indicating a significant reduction in nausea complaints.

Conclusion: These findings indicate that ST36 acupressure is effective, safe, simple, non-invasive, and economical. Therefore, it can be recommended as an additional therapy in maternal nursing care practice to manage emesis gravidarum.
