Introduction: Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a chronic condition that increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney failure, and even death. One potential strategy for the prevention and management of high blood pressure is progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique that focuses on systematic muscle activity to reduce muscular tension by intentionally inducing a state of relaxation.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the effect of implementing progressive muscle relaxation techniques on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 48 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Blood pressure was measured before and after progressive muscle relaxation.
Results: Mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 162.8 to 146.7 mmHg, and mean diastolik blood pressure decreased from 95.6 to 88.8 mmHg. These values represent descriptive reductions of approximately 16.1 and 6.8 mmHg, respectively.
Conclusion: Mean blood pressure was lower after progressive muscle relaxation. A causal effect cannot be established from the uncontrolled design, and the statistical significance of the before-after changes requires confirmation using the appropriate paired analysis.
