Abstract

Introduction: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a condition of excessive nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that may affect nutritional status, sleep patterns, and psychological well-being of pregnant women. Acupressure at the PC6 point is a non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied in maternity nursing care to reduce nausea. This study aimed to describe the application of PC6 acupressure in maternity nursing care for reducing nausea in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum.

Objectives: This study employed a case study design involving two patients with hyperemesis gravidarum hospitalized in the X Hospital, South Lampung.

Method: The main intervention was PC6 acupressure, administered for 3×10 minutes per day over 3×24 hours in accordance with standard operating procedures. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation review. Nausea levels were assessed using The Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting and Retching (INVR).

Result: The results demonstrated a decrease in nausea levels in both patients after the application of PC6 acupressure. At the beginning of care, both patients experienced nausea accompanied by vomiting and decreased appetite. After 3×24 hours of intervention, nausea and vomiting complaints decreased and were no longer reported on the third day. Improvements in sleep patterns and reductions in anxiety levels were also observed.

Conclusion: The application of PC6 acupressure in maternity nursing care may help reduce nausea in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum and support improvements in sleep patterns and psychological conditions. This intervention can be considered as a complementary non-pharmacological nursing intervention for pregnant women experiencing nausea and vomiting.
